In my next of the woods, Gas prices are north of $4.00 plus and some gas stations are $5.00 a gallon. More vehicles need to be more efficient to help consumers save at the gas pumps. The difference between the RAV4 xse hybrid verses the RAV4 prime XSE is not very much with the tax rebate, and state rebates programs. In fact, it may be cheaper with the Prime.

Honestly, I don't see the point in plug-ins for most countries unless electricity is much cheaper than fuel there. A plug in will wear out it's batteries faster than a regular hybrid because lithium batteries get worn out the least the closest it is to the 50% mark. If you charge your plug in each night ( the whole point of it) to 100% it will wear out much quicker. Bear in mind I am talking from the perspective of a person that likes to use cars for more than a decade. If you change your car 5-7 years don't worry about what I wrote,

I've now owned my Rav4 Prime for a month. Not overwhelmed by the handling, especially the brakes. Under heavy braking the nose dives alarmingly. It feels reasonably planted on the road but there isn't much feedback from the road and you certainly feel like you're driving a heavy car. I imagine the hybrid feels a little better? Quality is excellent, but of course the Rav4 Prime is manufactured in Japan so that's to be expected. Around now (2021) most of the bugs on the Rav4 have been fixed. The transmission is noisy when you throw it in reverse - not sure if this is deliberate but it seems to be something it shares in common with the hybrid. I'm not a fan. I still do not understand why ANYONE would sell a power seat without at least 2 driver memory. On the Rav4 Hybrid or Prime it is ridiculously expensive to get this simple feature. Toyota needs to reconsider its feature packaging. Would I buy this car again? Probably. But I look forward to the day that electric cars are cheaper, can go at least 350 miles and can do at least a 90% recharge in under 5 minutes (at a charging station that does not cost 40c to 50c per kwHr).

It's always astounding to me the useless crap these car reviewers point out in their videos. I don't give a crap for interior trims, button lights or patterns on rubber knobs. I don't even give a shit about the GUI on the screen because I go straight to Apple Carplay. I bought this car because I wanted an electric AWD that fit my family. That's exactly what I got.

I was annoyed every time Doug said this is the second fastest vehicle Toyota sells. "Fastest" will imply top speed. When talking about acceleration, the proper term should be "quickest". So this Rav-4 is Toyota's second quickest vehicle.

I've consistently seen over 46 mile range in my Rav4 SE around town (some freeway, mostly cross-street driving). This is significantly better than Toyota's conservative 42 mile range. Caveat: the range will presumably drop with age and with mid-summer A/C (I live in Arizona). I bought this car because I live close to a city center and wanted to go electric for daily commutes, shopping and gym; both to save on gas and reduce urban pollution haze. Conversely, I didn't want range anxiety. So the stand-out range of the Rav4 Prime is a big draw. Aside from weekend trips I've managed to drive 100% electric day-to-day. And yes, I do love the burst of power the electric motors provide - especially overtaking on 2 lane roads. The other advantage to the Prime is towing capacity, which is increased from 1500lbs on the standard Rav4 Hybrid up to 2500lbs. Effectively (taking away the weight of a fold-up trailer) this doubles the payload. The handling is unremarkable but typical for this class of vehicle. Fortunately I also own several, two-seater, mid-engine sportscars to satiate my love of the driving experience. Brakes are annoying - far too much dive under heavy braking and a fair amount of bounce while doing so. In part this may be because the regen is primarily focused on the front axles, but I do think Toyota should've upgraded the suspension - preferably with electromagentic struts. I suspect this will come in the 2022 refresh. Speaking of which, if I had to buy a hybrid in the $30K to $40K range it would be the Subaru Tucson Hybrid. Toyota will need to refresh their entire Rav4 hybrid line if they wish to stay competitive with the Tucson Hybrid - it has the Rav4 beat in just about every category from engine power to real-world fuel economy to looks.

It's good but it's competing with the Tesla model 3 (model y is over 50k but lower range model y may be in competition). I'll say I don't see how this is even close to Tesla. I came from a toyota tundra to a tesla and will never look back. The integration with modern tech with Tesla is incredible. If you are interested in a rav4 prime I highly suggest at least test driving and researching a Tesla.

Trying to convince my mom to get this since she has a Prius Prime I can tell she hates. She loves driving my Bronco Sport but pretty much needs a hybrid for her daily commute. I think if I can convince her to get this and her husband an F-150 Lightning they can get what they want and still have the fuel efficiency (or no need for fuel). Living in CA as well so gas ain't cheap.

Clearly Doug does not appreciate why Toyota focuses on boring things like dependability, reliability and quality, which seem not to do well on his "Doug Score"... He also missed the point of the squared off and more rugged design, just like the bigger rubber wrapped dials all of this is focused on making the vehicle more acceptable to male buyers... The "Bird's Eye View" camera is meant as a practical device to show you what is next to your vehicle, its not a channel to watch for its video quality... Go back to your forte of reviewing irrelevant 30 plus year old vehicles

@Thionta Buckner I looked at the premium because I wanted the seat memory. But by the time I'd factored in the necessary packages, and taking into account the $7500 tax credit, the actual cost of the Rav4 Prime was lower than the XLE premium. The Premium does handle and brake better than the Prime however. Not enough was done on the Prime's engineering to compensate for the extra weight. If I were buying a hybrid cross-over tomorrow it would be the new Subaru Tucson Hybrid. The Rav4 needs a significant engineering and styling refresh to stay competitive.
